Snape/Harry history (with some HP fandom history thrown in for fun)

A work in progress.

SS/HP timeline

  • 1 July 1997: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is released in the U.K.
  • July 1998: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is released in the U.K.
  • 1 September 1998: Book one is released in the U.S. under the name Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
  • June 1999: CoS is released in the U.S.
  • 8 July 1999: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban comes out in the U.K.
  • 4 September 1999: Morrigain posts Harry Potter and the Man of Unknown, the very first HP fic on fanfiction.net
  • October 1999: PoA is released in the U.S.
  • July 2000: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is released worldwide
  • 23 October 2000: Majolique posts "Midnight Confessions" on the HP slash mailing list (message #2502). This story is currently thought to be the first Snape/Harry story out there. It can be read on the Potter Slash Archive (password-protected).
  • 31 October 2000: Unquiet posts part one of "A Different Lesson" on the HP slash mailing list (message #2713). Part two was posted on FFN on 9 November. The story can now be read at Walking the Plank.
  • August 2001: Kangeiko posts Two Loveable Young Women first on a Yahoo!groups mailing list, and then to FFN
  • August 2001: Telanu begins writing the Tea series
  • October 2001: McKay (then JayKay) releases "Too Wise to Woo Peaceably"
  • November 2001: Luthien writes Aftermath in response to a challenge posted by Telanu on the (now-defunct) SnapeSlash mailing list
  • 16 November 2001: The first HP movie opens worldwide. Snapeslash in general really took off around this time, a fact which many fen attribute to the Rickman factor.
  • 24 November 2001: Alia founds SnapexHarry, a Yahoo group and mailing list. Early members included Telanu, Luthien and McKay
  • 1 December 2001: Sushi joins the ship. Her first fic is Marching off to War, part of the now-famous Civil War series
  • March 2002: The first wave of the Severus Snape Fuh-Q Fest opens. It was organized by Luthien and Tboy, and really contributed to the number and variety of Snapeslash stories. Cybele and Josan wrote their first stories for the SSFF, and a number of Minx's early stories were also written for the fest.
  • Fall 2002: The first wave of From Dusk Til Dawn, the SS/HP Fuh-q Fest, opens for business.
  • 21 June 2003: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is released worldwide
  • 16 July 2005: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is released worldwide

This information was largely compiled by Ptyx, who has spent a fair amount of time tracking down the origins of Snape/Harry. There's more in her post here and in the comments to this post. Another good source is the Snarry Reader's interview with Luthien, who's been with the ship almost since the beginning.
